How to Trust God Through Uncertain Seasons

Do you like change? You know, those in-between moments of life when the old is gone, but the new hasn’t fully taken shape yet.

If you’ve ever walked through a big life change, you know what I mean. Maybe your nest has emptied, your job title changed, your circle of friends shifted, or your plans suddenly unraveled. These seasons can shake your confidence and stretch your faith. But here's what I’ve learned: God is never absent in the in-between.

Let’s walk through this together, sister. I want to share Scripture promises that have anchored me in times of uncertainty and tell you a personal story about when I left a stable job to homeschool my youngest son. I hope this encourages you if you find yourself in a season of uncertainty.

From Steady Paycheck to Unknown

For years, I worked at a local nonprofit in a middle management role. It was steady, predictable, and something I was good at. Plus I loved my coworkers. My paycheck came twice a month like clockwork, and I had no reason to rock the boat. But after seven years, I felt a pull to do something different.

My youngest son needed something different. His learning journey wasn’t working, and no matter how hard we tried to make it work, it became clear that homeschooling was the best option. But this decision came with real-life consequences that would affect my entire household. Walking away from a reliable income felt like stepping off a cliff with no parachute.

I wrestled with God in prayer: “How can I give up something secure for something so uncertain?” But I also knew that obedience rarely comes without risk. So I stepped out in faith. I turned in my resignation, rearranged our family’s schedule, and opened a brand-new chapter.

What followed wasn’t easy, but it was beautiful. I saw my son begin to thrive. Instead of crying in the morning, he was eager to learn. And somewhere along the way, something unexpected happened: I launched a catering business.

What started as a few meals for friends and neighbors grew into a service business that not only helped make ends meet, but allowed me to do what I love, on my terms, with purpose. God did more than provide for my household. He redirected me toward something even more aligned with who He created me to be.

1. God Goes Before You

"The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." – Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

This verse became my anchor when I left my job. My mind told me leaving didn’t make sense. But God reminded me: He was already in my future. He had seen the need, the business idea, and the provision long before I had the courage to take the leap.

You don’t need a map when you have a Guide. Even if your GPS is saying “recalculating,” God isn’t surprised by your detour. Trust that He’s gone ahead of you and is making the crooked places straight.

2. You’re Not Meant to Do This Alone

"God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing..." – Psalm 68:6a (NIV)

A struggle I have fought for as long as I can remember is a feeling of isolation. My former coworkers cultivated a workplace that had a family feel and I missed that. No more morning meetings, no more small talk in the kitchen while grabbing a cup of tea or sifting through the manna fridge. Just me, my son, and a lot of unknowns. I wish I could say I pivoted gracefully during this season but that would be untrue.

But over time, God placed new connections into my life. Local catering clients became friends. I joined a commercial kitchen and made new friends there. And even in the kitchen, preparing meals for others, I felt a renewed sense of belonging.

Big virtual hug if you feel lonely right now. Don’t be ashamed of that ache. Let it draw you closer to the One who promises to place you in family. Ask Him to open doors to new relationships, and be brave enough to walk through them.

3. Provision Will Come

"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." – Philippians 4:19 (NIV)

It feels materialistic to admit this next part but I’ll say it anyway. The scariest part of leaving my job wasn’t the work. It was money. Bills still came in. Groceries still needed to be bought. But God met every single need. Not always how I expected, but always in time.

As I thumb through my journal, I’m reminded of how God has provided when I didn’t think there was a way. God was faithful in ways I couldn’t have orchestrated on my own.

When you trust God through a transition, you’re placing your life in His hands. He is not careless with what you entrust to Him. He sees every bill, every need, every burden. Keep showing up. Keep sowing seeds. The harvest will come.

Last year’s business revenue surpassed my previous nonprofit salary. Praise God!

4. Your Identity Isn’t Tied to Your Circumstances

"Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine." – Isaiah 43:1 (ESV)

I didn’t realize how much of my identity had been wrapped up in my title until I no longer had one. It felt strange to introduce myself without a role attached. For a moment, I wondered, Who am I now?

But in that space, God gently reminded me: I am more than my career. I am more than my productivity. I am His. It was humbling. And that truth re-centered everything.

Sister, you are more than your season. You are more than your title, your zip code, or your social circle. You are chosen. Named. Loved. Even when life is shifting around you, your identity in Christ is unshakeable.

5. Growth Comes in the Stretching

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." – James 1:2–3 (NIV)

As a rule, I’m not a fan of change. I am perfectly content cruising along in the slow lane, not bothering a soul. But unexpected transition has stretched me in ways I never expected. My trust has been tested, my discipline, and my ability to let go of control. But on the other side of the discomfort was growth.

I have become more dependent on God’s Word. I pray more honestly. I lean into grace instead of guilt.

Don’t hate the discomfort of this season. God is building something in you that comfort could never produce. Let the stretching draw you deeper into His strength.

What He has shown me this season:

Faith rarely means having the whole plan and seeing the full picture. Sometimes it just means obeying the nudge and trusting God with the rest. I didn’t know what would come from homeschooling my son or starting a business, but I knew I couldn’t ignore what God was asking me to do.

Each obedient step has led somewhere: some very good, some things I wouldn’t have asked for, some things that have brought me to tears and many things that bring a smile to my face as I type this.

Maybe you’re in a season right now where everything feels up in the air. You're waiting on direction, clarity, or provision. Can I encourage you? Take the next faithful step.
